What A Blog Is And Is Not

- By: Rene Graeber

A good working definition of a blog is simply a journal or newsletter that is frequently updated and intended for the timely reading.

It often provides opportunities for unfiltered and immediate feedback, sports an informal or even partisan attitude, and is written in a more personal style than traditional press outlets.

Blogs come in all shapes and subjects, from the maunderings of troubled teen souls to displays of classical photography to breaking news and commentary.

They can be online journals, locked with a password shared by a few trusted friends, or they can be page after page of source code, sharing useful and free computer programs with the world.

A blog may be an online journal tangential to a company’s main business, where users of a company’s products give feedback and ask for help. Blogs can be hosted by single individuals, shared by teams, or produced by entire companies.

They may be hosted on a dedicated blog server using fancy templates or lovingly hand-crafted in HTML on a page that resembles a bulletin board.

But a blog is not simply a syndicated column or a newspaper that is online. Many news outlets feature their content online and even allow readers to respond to stories.

However, the newspaper’s business does not change just because it has a new medium. Editors and writers still do the same jobs they did before the advent of online distribution; the newspaper does not view itself as any different from what it always was.

And perhaps therein lies the difference: attitude.

The newspaper sees itself as presenting all the news that’s fit to print, written by objective professionals, while the blogger sees himself as presenting a piece of his own world and his own expertise from his own perspective.

As blogs become more popular, more columnists are becoming bloggers and more bloggers are becoming professional in what they write. Perhaps in a few years, the distinction between the Old Media and the New will be irrelevant in the mind of writers; for many readers today, it already is.

The number of individual blogs has topped 20 million and readership is exploding.

In fact, the trade magazine Ad Age reports that during 2005 alone, American workers will spend the equivalent of 551,000 years reading blogs, rumor sheets, and online diaries.

Hundreds of millions of readers worldwide get their news and entertainment from these independent sources, supporting their favorite bloggers through donations, link usage, and purchase of blog-related memorabilia.

7 Profitable Joint Venture Tactics For Your Blog
- By: Liz Tomey

1. Find someone that has a blog related to your topic. Offer to blog about their blog if they will blog about yours. In doing this, you'll both be swapping blog readers that you may have not been able to reach otherwise. Do this with several different people that have blogs related to your topic and soon you will have a huge blog readership.

2. Endorse a product that belongs to someone else via your blog. Ask them to endorse one of your products in exchange. By doing this both of you will benefit from each others blog visitors.

3. Grab a sheet of paper and a pen, or open your word processing program. Now go to a blog search engine and search for keywords related to your blog. When you find blogs related to your blog, write down (or type) the blog website address, any side notes about the blog, and the contact information of the blog owner. Now take your list and start emailing each blog owner for a link swap.

4. Get a group of people together that are bloggers. All of you pick one topic that can be profitable either by promoting affiliate products or by Google Adsense revenue. All of you will start blogging about the topic. Take the RSS feeds from each persons blog, and place them on one website. All of you will make reference to this site where the RSS feeds are placed. By doing this you will all share traffic via a group effort.

5. If you know someone that blogs on the same topic that you do, ask for a blog post exchange. Tell them you will write a "guest" blog post for them, if they will do the same. That way both of you will be giving fresh content from a different person to your readers. Adding some variety to your blogs will keep people coming back often.

6. Create an audio blog post (podcast) for a few blogs related to your blog. Make sure to mention your blog in it. Tell the blog owner if they post the audio blog post on their blog, that you will create an audio blog post mentioning their blog for them, and post it to your own blog. You'll only want to do this with blogs that have a lot of readers because there is a bit more work involved in this tactic.

7. Large businesses actually hire people to blog for them. Not because it's profitable for these big companies but because it let's the outside world know what's going on with these big companies. This starts to build a trust with the people who read these blogs. Knowing this information, I decided to start a testimonial category on my blog. In doing this, people begin to trust me and see me as an authority figure on the topic I am blogging on. You can also do this by telling people you have started a testimonial category on your blog. Ask them to leave a true testimonial on your blog in exchange for something like a free ebook. If they have a testimonial category on their blog, tell them you will give them a testimonial if they will give you one. Always remember though only give true to heart testimonials.

Blogging has been a very hot topic for a few years now. Internet marketers have embraced blogging, and turned it into an incredible marketing tactic. I've done some "joint venturing" with my blogs, and I'd like to reveal my most profitable joint venture blogging tactics to you. Here are 7 joint venture blogging tactics that you can implement right now in your own business.

Why Use Blogs Instead Of Website
- By: Brandon Hong

Why would you use Blogs instead of a web site for your online business?

You can definitely continue using a website in your online business.

Combining a website and a Blog however offer a number of superior advantages in terms of traffic generation, marketing and efficiency which a stand-alone website cannot do.

(a) Automatic push-button publishing.

Blogs are the easiest and cheapest way to have an online presence. For example, if you’re using Blogger, your Blog is hosted free by Blogger. Blogs allow you to publish your website without the need to know about any technical or programming issues such as HTML, FrontPage, FTP and so on.

Blogs provide a simple editorial interface. All you need to do is write your content, and publish it just by clicking the ‘publish’ button in most cases, and you’re done.

(b) Fosters relationship building, trust and ‘stickyness’

Unlike websites, which are static, Blogs allows interaction between you and your readers. Blogs have a commenting function, and if turned on, it allows readers and visitors to post their comments, thoughts or opinions to a particular article you have written.

Constant interaction with your readers builds a feeling of community and ‘stickyness’ factor. You can then recommend products more easily to them, and they would be more ready and willing to accept your product or services.

(c) Increase search engine ranking

Almost every major search engine has a software program called a ‘bot’ that searches or ‘spiders’ websites online to find new content which it can then bring back to update the search engine databases.

Basically what this means is the more frequently you update your site, the more frequently the search engine ‘bot’ will visit your site, and this helps to boost your search engine rankings.

If you make regular postings to your Blog, you can be sure that search engines will visit your Blog again and again.

You can then place links of your other websites in your Blog and these will get indexed quickly by the search engines.

Of course you could also update your existing web site with new content, but you would have to go through a more technical process, that of using an HTML editor or FrontPage and uploading through FTP and so on.

(d) Free listing in Google, Yahoo and MSN

The traditional way of getting your website listed in these three major search engines: Google, Yahoo and MSN is slow and inefficient.

A listing in Yahoo directory alone would cost you $299.

However, with the inclusion of RSS feeds by these search engines, you can now gain a ‘backdoor’ listing which is legal and free. If you have an RSS feed, you can have it included in Yahoo and MSN and your website will be immediately listed in these major search engines within 24 hours!

My video e-course shows you the step-by-step process on how to do this.
(e) Syndication Power

The most powerful feature of a Blog is its syndication function. Blogs can be turned into RSS feeds, and most Blogging service providers have this built-in function.

It is just a matter of turning it on from within your account.

Once it’s turned into an RSS feed, you can syndicate your Blog contents by:

• Submitting to the major RSS directories and search engines like Yahoo and MSN, gaining free exposure and free traffic
• Allow other website owners to publish your feed on their sites, again, getting free traffic you otherwise will not have
• Gain new readers, subscribers and potential clients by letting them subscribe to your RSS feed via a newsreader

Why would you use Blogs instead of a web site for your online business?

You can definitely continue using a website in your online business.

Combining a website and a Blog however offer a number of superior advantages in terms of traffic generation, marketing and efficiency which a stand-alone website cannot do.

Brandon is blogs & rss author. He'll show you business strategies to get more responsive visitors, more sales, plus obtaining quick listings in Google, MSN, etc with Blogs and RSS.
